        Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has evolved considerably beyond its original purpose of automating routine tasks to become a core technology for the intelligent automation of all parts of an organization, from the front office to the back office. RPA is has grown its scope of capabilities to support their digital transformation because it produces significant gains in productivity and efficiency beyond simply automating mechanical, repetitive processes in a continuous, end-to-end fashion. RPA has demonstrated the ability to create new sources of revenue, improve customer experience, enable workforce optimization, enhance visibility into processes and improve operational performance. And more recently it has expanded its potential by applying artificial intelligence using machine learning and IT-enabled interpretive techniques. This includes optical character recognition and natural language processing which, when used together, can greatly expand the scope of RPA systems to perform more complex tasks.

        Today’s RPA systems can perform a full range of complex business-critical tasks and decision making at scale. And increasingly, organizations already using RPA are adopting a cloud-based approach to RPA as are those that are just starting out and want to accelerate without constraints. The cloud-based approach will also be important for organizations that have run RPA pilots, but that are ready to expand their RPA initiatives in breadth or complexity.
