"Many organizations find that their human resources information is riddled with inaccuracies, inconsistencies and duplications. A primary cause of these problems is the tool most often used to process, store and share the information: desktop spreadsheets. Ventana Research has found time and again that when these personal productivity tools are used for collaborative enterprise processes, their familiarity and convenience is more than offset by the frequency of errors resulting from manual entry of data and the lack of referential and data integrity. For example, nearly all (92%) participants in our benchmark research on next-generation workforce management reported using spreadsheets to some degree to manage their core workforce management information. And almost half of those said that the use of spreadsheets makes it difficult to manage their workforce. Chief among the issues they encounter are errors and inconsistency in data due to manual processing by individuals."
