Ventana Research Releases Business Analytics in Technology Sector Benchmark Research and Education
Lack of investment and priority has impaired the potential of business analytics

 

San Ramon, Calif. – February 16, 2012 New benchmark research from Ventana Research finds that just 15 percent of technology businesses have the highest Innovative level of maturity in their use of analytics, despite being part of the industry that has the more direct knowledge of the technology to advance people, process and information readiness in an organization.  

With business people in the technology sector under increasing pressure to operate more efficiently and make better decisions, it is important they comprehend the full potential of business analytics and how to best take advantage of them.  This new benchmark research from Ventana Research, the leading business technology research firm, presents comprehensive, research-based information on technology organizations’ attitudes towards business analytics.   

The research found that about half (49 percent) of technology companies are satisfied with the process currently used to create analytics while 38 percent are not satisfied with it identifying it is hard to build and maintain, process is too slow and information is not actionable as top three issues. Regarding the current technology for creating and applying analytics, less than half (48 percent) are satisfied and with a significant dependence on spreadsheets in 85 percent of organizations, it should be no surprise over a third (38 percent) will be making changes to their analytics in the next 12 to 18 months. 

“This research finds that spreadsheets are used regularly by most organizations and that organizations are spending almost two thirds of their time in data related tasks compared to analytic ones,” said Mark Smith, CEO and Chief Research Officer of Ventana Research.  "These two key findings along with other factors show a bleak outlook for the technology sector. This sector has the capabilities to set the standards for effectively utilizing business analytics across all industries."
