Occupied with responding to the regulatory pressure of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the never-ending quarterly and annual close efforts, organizations have been slow to take proactive steps to improve management processes. It now appears that finance executives will have to create new positions in their organizations to take on business performance management initiatives. In terms of the technology to improve performance, more is needed than the current accounting suites from Oracle and SAP or the financial planning and consolidation applications of Hyperion. Improving financial processes alone will not be enough to advance the organization. Visibility into how financials align to business strategy and initiatives is now available in applications that go far beyond stand-alone spreadsheets or presentation documents. New advances from Cartesis and PerformanceSoft (part of Actuate) provide flexibility for managing business performance.
