San Ramon, Calif. – January 19, 2012 –
Ventana Research has released its latest
Benchmark Research, The Challenge of Big Data, concerning the management of
large-scale data management and processing.
Organizations of all sizes
and from across all industries have found themselves being deluged by an
increasing and never-ending amount of data, coming from a variety of sources.
Organizations are also capturing data at a deeper level of detail and keeping
more history than ever before. Together, this data is known as “big data” – defined
in this research as beginning at one terabyte and increasing to petabytes and
beyond. Organizations are
struggling to find ways to not only store this data, but also analyze it and
turn it info useful information.
Ventana
Research undertook this benchmark research to acquire real-world information
about levels of maturity, trends and best practices in organizations’ use of
large-scale data management systems. It explores how they do this now, how
people at various levels feel about the current processes and tools, plans they
have to change or improve growing volumes and velocity of data, and benefits
they hope to gain by doing so.
The
research found that while 90 percent of organizations are using relational
databases on standard hardware for their large-scale data processing, 93
percent of these companies are using or evaluating other technologies as well.
Organizations are considering a range of alternatives including: data warehouse
appliances; in-memory databases; specialized analytical database and technologies;
and also a new approach called Hadoop, an open source based data processing software.
“The
big data market is still evolving, and the variety of technologies being
considered suggests organizations need to deploy multiple solutions for their
big data needs,” said David Menninger, VP & Research Director of Ventana
Research. “Nine out of ten organizations surveyed rated scalability and
performance as the most important criteria in their evaluation of big data
technologies.
This research will provide these organizations
with key insights and education on the management of big data.”
