Cognos has introduced Cognos Now!, a business intelligence (BI) appliance and software as a service (SaaS) based on technology it acquired in the January 2007 acquisition of Celequest. It describes this product as the first in a planned family of performance management products that will come to market as preconfigured appliances or as SaaS. Cognos is aiming it at operational BI, the requirements of which Ventana Research believes are distinct from those of strategic or tactical uses of BI. Cognos Now! draws on builds on business activity monitoring concepts developed previously by Celequest, including event alerts and monitoring, but adds analysis and response within the contexts of business workflow and process. The product has self-service dashboards and monitoring tools that allow users to track and respond to changing conditions; Using it, companies also can set workflow processes to assign monitoring responsibilities and to determine who receives automated alerts. It also supports event-driven monitoring and provides analytical capabilities through business views set up by the dashboards. Cognos Now! should help companies extend BI to operational users so they can make informed decisions in accordance with objectives. The vendor’s appliance and SaaS approaches fit with software industry trends (Cognos also introduced a version specifically for salesforce.com environments). But although the appliance and SaaS approaches merit serious consideration, Ventana Research urges that companies ensure that using them fits with their overall information management strategy.
